Due to Clay Township (neighboring to the south) becoming more conservative with development due to a reduction in available land over the past few years, Washington Township has seen an increase in residential communities being developed.

Washington Township covers an area of 55.94 square miles (144.9 km²); of this, 0.09 square mile (0.2330989299 km²) or 0.16 percent is water. The streams of Bear Creek, Grassy Branch and Woodruff Branch run through this township.
