's Rome Scholar for the next three years. Between 1931 and 1939, Monnington taught drawing in the Royal Academy Schools.

In 1932 Monnington was chosen by the Naval Gunnery School to portrait the Admiral of the Fleet

. However, Monnington's finished work was returned to him following objections from Countess Jellicoe, who took exception to the portrayal of her husband.

Following his appointment as President of the Royal Academy

 in 1966, he was knighted in 1967. He served as President until his death in London on 7 January 1976.

Monnington married the artist and fellow Slade student and Rome Scholar, Winifred Knights
