Events will take place at ten existing venues without permanent works required, eight existing venues needing works, nine new venues constructed for the Summer Games, and seven temporary venues that will be removed following the games. In addition, four venues outside Rio de Janeiro will host football events, in the cities of Brasília

(IOC) decided to include golf
and rugby sevens in the Olympic program
. Thus, the newly formed Rio de Janeiro Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (ROCOG) proposed São Januário Stadium
to stage the Rugby sevens tournament, and either Gávea Golf Club or Itanhangá Golf Club to host the golf competition. The International Rugby Board
(IRB) approved the proposed venue, while the International Golf Federation
(IGF) has not ruled yet.
The Rio OC is planning to hold all the competitions inside the city, in four Olympic clusters—Barra

, and Maracanã
—as was done in the 2007 Pan American Games
. Several of the venues will be located at the Barra Cluster Olympic Park. The largest venue at the games in terms of seating capacity
is the Maracanã Stadium

For the first time the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Summer Olympics are not to be held in the same place as athletics events and all gymnastics events will take place in same arena.
