. Through the 2008 men's U-19 championship, the men's championship was sanctioned by the International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) and the women's championship was sanctioned by the International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations (IFWLA). In August 2008, the two bodies merged to form the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL), which will take over both competitions.

They were first held for men in 1988 and first held for women in 1995. They have only been held in the same year twice and both times in the same country, however the 2003 U-19's was the first championship held jointly with the ILF and IFWLA. The United States has won the ILF U-19's every single year it has been held and has won the IFWLA U-19's for the past two events.
