and Southwestern United States
. One of its shows at the 2008 Festival Latinoamericano
in Provo, Utah
set an attendance record with over 1,000 people present at opening night.
It was affiliated with AWA Superstars from 2005 to 2007, and is currently a member the National Wrestling Alliance
co-promoting events with NWA Pro. A number of independent wrestlers spent their early careers in the promotion, most notably, 'Blitz' Mason, who was established as the first UCW-Zero Heavyweight Champion, Derrick Jannety, Los Mochis'Paco, and Martin Casaus who was the promotion's first UCW-Zero Ultra-X Champion and in 2011 also was apart of WWE "Tough Enough". UCW-Zero has also featured former wrestlers from Extreme Championship Wrestling
, Total Non-Stop Action and the WWE.
. He initially built a basement wrestling ring at his home where they could wrestle safely, then later bought a used boxing ring
, and were later joined by their friends. Shortly after one of the wrestlers, Los Mochi Paco, developed a website
for UCW-Zero "other promoters started noticing the Website and the wrestling ring and began to contact us. From there, we started training to be pro wrestlers and started doing shows". Neilson eventually established a wrestling school from his personal ring and was able to gather a small group of well-trained local wrestlers. He himself would appear as "Stevie Slick" whose in-ring persona is modeled after World Wrestling Entertainment
's "Mr. McMahon".
Throughout 2003 and 2004 their shows were held at the Centro Civico Mexicano in Salt Lake City. and at St. Joseph's Church in West Jordan, Utah
in 2005. That same year, it became affiliated with AWA Superstars. On December 13, 2003 at Season's beatings II, Blitz Mason teamed with TNA Superstar David Young in a tag team main event against Derrick Jannety and TNA Superstar Eliz Skipper. Later that year, at Season's Beatings III on December 11, 2004, in a rematch, Blitz Mason defeated then NWA World Heavyweight Champion AJ Styles in a non-title Match. On August 6, 2005, UCW-Zero held one of its first shows under the AWA banner at Salt Lake City's Fight Coliseum. The main event featured Sabu
and The Public Enemy
(Johnny Grunge
& Joey Grunge) in a six-man tag team match against "Utah's most popular tag team" Los Mochis (Paco & Damien) with a mystery partner.
Utah, like most of the Rocky Mountains
and Southwestern United States
, is rarely visited by mainstream wrestling promotions such as Total Non-Stop Action and World Wrestling Entertainment
. Within five years, UCW-Zero was able to build a strong following in the region and eventually expanded into Arizona
, Colorado
and California
as well holding shows as far as Chicago
and West Virginia
. One show in Pocatello, Idaho
drew a crowd of over 6,000. In a later interview, Neilson credited his wrestlers for the promotions success, "I would say the wrestlers we have are perfectionists. They train hard. They train every single week. They're in the gym, in the wrestling ring, and working continuously to perfect their craft."
In January 2007, UCW-Zero held a major event at Salt Lake City’s Fight Coliseum which featured a championship tournament where Los Mochi Paco, Jeff Orcut, “Mr. Spectacular” Devan Payne, and masked wrestler Kid Cade fought for the Ultra-X Championship. Kid Cade defeated Payne in the finals to win the title. Another standout match included a hardcore-style "table match" between "fan favorites" Guerrero Azteca and Khan Kussion. The main event saw UCW-Zero Heavyweight Champion Tristan Gallo
successfully defend his title against David Young
. Young first met Neilson, then wrestling for Total Non-Stop Action, at a wrestling event in Denver, Colorado
and became one several major wrestling stars to compete for the promotion on a semi-regular basis. Among these included Marty Jannetty
, A.J. Styles
and Sabu
, the latter a longtime veteran of Extreme Championship Wrestling
. That summer, UCW-Zero was profiled by the Salt Lake City Weekly
. The promotion also left AWA Superstars to join the National Wrestling Alliance
and began co-promoting shows with NWA Pro.
UCW-Zero held its year end supercard, Season's Beatings, in Salt Lake City on December 7, 2007. Neilson, then in a kayfabe feud
with newly appointed commissioner Stan the Man, was forced to participate in the battle royal
opening the show. In the main event, Jeff Orcut pinned UCW-Zero Ultra-X Champion Cassidy to regain the title for the second time.
On August 16, 2008, UCW-Zero and NWA Pro held an interpromotional event at the St. Joseph Church Rec Center in West Jordan, Utah
. The show featured Paul Diamond against Derrick Jannetty and a non-title "Champion vs Champion" match between NWA Fusion Pro Wrestling Champion Dustin Uhrich and NWA UCW-Zero Champion Tristan Gallo. In the main event, Jr-X defeated Kid Kade, Chip, Jeff Orcut and Stevie Slick in a gauntlet match to win the UCW-Zero Ultra-X Championship. Later that month, UCW-Zero held an event at the Festival Latinoamericano
in Provo, Utah
. The show was attended by over 1,000 people, the largest opening night crowd in its history, and saw Stevie Slick pin Jeff Orcut become the number one contender for the UCW-Zero Ultra-X Championship.
In July 2009, UCW-Zero held an event at the South Valley Boys & Girls Club in Murray, Utah
. The event was included in a feature story
by the Provo Daily Herald
of UCW-Zero wrestler Derrick Jannetty and the promotion. In September to December of 2009 UCW ZERO was invaded by Las Vegas promotion Adrenaline Unleashed. This in vasion caused war between the two promotions for 4 and a half months as they fought for the Ultra x, Heavyweight, and Tag Team Titles. Adrenaline Unleashed was composed of members Eccentric Lion, Jayson Cash, Antonio Mestre, Tommy Misfit, Lex Lucco, David Cassidy and Tristan Gallo. This war became viral to Utah as event by event the crowd grew bigger reaching a maximum audience of 500 +. This war caused some of the most entertaining moments in ucw to occur such as gauntlet, lumberjack, no dq, and T.L.C matches to defend titles in. the war ended at Seasons Beatings 2009 where the ucw roster and the adrenaline unleashed roster fought against echother in singles matches except for the main event which was a tag team T.L.C match between eccentric lion, Jayson Cash and Junior x, Losmochi Paco. The war came to an end when Eccentric lion was defeated by junior x in a loser leaves utah match because of this most of the Adrenaline UNleashed roster returned to Vegas with Lion. Antonio Mestre never lost the belt and returned to vegas thus defuncting the belt. In conclusion this storyline became the most memeorable event in ucw zero history
In early 2010 UCW ZERO was expanded by opening the new "UCW Training Center". The center will be used to train future UCW Stars and hold regular shows twice a month. UCW ZERO management responsibilities was divided between four directors, with Steve Neilson as the figure head. Long time UCW ZERO competitor Los Mochi Paco finally won the UCW Zero Heavyweight Title in May 2010 at 'Rise to the Top', the title that eluded his long tenure in Utah Wrestling after many years of main event status.
2011 saw the UCW-Zero brand grow with Tristan Gallo (Martin Casaus) got the opportunity to appear on the WWE's revival of 'Tough Enough'. However, Martin's dream of winning a contract was eliminated after he fractured his ankle. As of June 2011, he is close to a full recovery and a imminate return to the ring. Another new UCW-Zero star on the rise is Tyler Cintron. Cintron was invited to Florida for a WWE tryout in March 2011.
in Provo, Utah
