The program, which requires potential applicants to possess a well-rounded range of technical competencies, is known to be highly selective and is very well regarded worldwide for the quality of its graduates. The school offers several professional degrees including the standard Masters in Science (M.L.I.S.), Masters in Biological Informatics, and a Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.S.). The school offers a flexible curriculum to take advantage of student interests and many specializations, including K-12 Librarianship, Manuscript and Archival studies, Information Systems, Community Informatics, Administration, and Data Curation.

The school has an equally prestigious Ph.D. program in LIS, being the oldest such program in the country. Illinois' program is primarily oriented towards information studies interdisciplinary research, and as such most graduates enter academia as opposed to seeking library or private sector employment. For those who do enter non-academic employment, they head major library collections at institutions such as the Library of Congress

The Ph.D. program has a new concentration called Information in Society, that seeks to bring together the study of information and its impact in society from a variety of different disciplines including history, economics, communications, and public policy, among others. Information in Society fellows, post-docs, and speakers are funded by a preparing future faculty grant from the Institute of Library and Museum Services.

Facilities

GSLIS is located on the corner of 5th and Daniel streets in Champaign, IL. The building used to be a fraternity house, and still has functional showers for both men and women. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, one of three campuses of the University of Illinois system, has over 40 libraries; their combined holdings are among the largest in the United States and the world.
