Töölö was built in 1920–1930 when Helsinki suffered from rapid population growth and needed more housing. Before that, Töölö was full of farms and some forest.

Töölö has always been respected as a place to live and the prices of apartments are high especially in Etu-Töölö. Töölö is also known for its functionalist architecture, notably around Taka-Töölö.
