The townships are the administrative subdivisions of Republic of China
(Taiwan) counties
, along with County-controlled city
. Most of the present townships originates from Towns (街) and Villages (庄) in the Japanese era
. After the World War II
, the ROC government
reformed them as urban townships (鎮 zhèn) and rural townships (鄉 xiāng). Local laws do not enforce strict standards for classifying them, generally urban township has a larger population and more business and industry than rural township, but not to the extent of County-controlled city
.
Recently there are totally 194 townships in the Republic of China, including 153 rural townships and 41 urban townships. 184 townships are under the 12 counties
of Taiwan Province
, 10 townships are under the two counties
of Fujian Province
. Penghu County and Lienchiang County
are the only two counties that do not have urban townships.
