Black joined the faculty of BYU in 1978. Black received the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Award in 2000. She is married to Harvey B. Black, who is an emeritus professor of Instructional Psychology and Technology at BYU. She also served as an associate dean of General Education and Honors.

Susan Easton Black holds an Ed. D. from BYU.
