A number of operator's licences are used by the company to operate services / vehicles under (the names of which generally come from companies which have been acquired in the past):
company, which was a subsidiary of Western Travel. Western Travel purchased the eastern operations of the National Welsh company, forming Red & White Omnibuses. The business expanded by purchasing Cynon Valley Transport which operated services in the Aberdare
and Merthyr Tydfil
areas. In 1992, a 10% share of neighbouring Rhondda Buses was acquired (see below). Western Travel was itself purchased in December 1993 by Stagecoach Holdings. As a result of the take over Red & White gradually became Stagecoach Red & White, in line with Stagecoach's corporate image.
Another integral part of today's business came from the purchase of Rhondda Buses Ltd. Rhondda Buses had been born out of the remnants of National Welsh's collapse in 1992 from a consortium of Stevensons of Uttoxeter

depots. In order to quell competition from neighbouring Red & White, Western Travel were also sold a 10% share (see above). Services were operated under the Rhondda fleetname from the Porth depot and Caerphilly Busways from the Caerphilly depot. Rhondda had expanded by purchasing the services of Parfitts Motor Services of Rhymney
Bridge, who operated in the Merthyr Tydfil
(competing with Stagecoach Red & White) and upper Rhymney
valley area. Stagecoach consolidated their position in December 2007 by buying out the remainder of the stakes held in Rhondda (which were now in the hands of Arriva
, First Bus and Julian Peddle) for £3.8 million. After the takeover, Rhondda services were operated under the Stagecoach Rhondda fleetname, whilst the Caerphilly and Rhymney Valley services were incorporated into Stagecoach Red & White.
A further acquisition before the end of the 1990s came when the services of Phil Anslow Travel were purchased, giving Stagecoach a greater presence in the Eastern Valleys and Gwent.
In 2000, Stagecoach revised its corporate identity, which rebranded all operations as Stagecoach in South Wales. Services in the Forest of Dean area became Stagecoach in Wye and Dean and were transferred to the neighbouring Stagecoach West
business.
In December 2004 Stagecoach in South Wales acquired (for the second time) the business of Phil Anslow Travel, who had developed a network of tendered services in Torfaen
as well as a daytrip and coach hire business. The bus services were subsumed into Stagecoach in South Wales, whilst the coaching business became Red & White Coaches. Subsequently Red & White Coaches failed to remain profitable and was phased out after a few years.
In 2006 Stagecoach purchased the Eastern Valleys independent operator Crosskeys Coach Hire who traded as Glyn Williams Travel. Glyn Williams' operating area was within that of Stagecoach in South Wales and many of their trunk services had been operated jointly with Stagecoach and their predecessor Red & White.
On Wednesday 28 October 2009 a press release from Caerphilly County Borough Council
announced that its bus company Islwyn Borough Transport
(IBT) would be sold to Stagecoach in South Wales. This was confirmed on 5 November when the borough's Cabinet Committee accepted the recommendation of the IBT board to sell the business subject to Office of Fair Trading
(OFT) approval. The OFT approved the sale on 23 December 2009, despite criticism (most notably from local businessman Clayton Jones) about the council deciding to sell to Stagecoach without putting the contract out to public tender. However the sale proceeded and was completed by 11 January 2010.
