. From 1812 to 1817 it was part of the of municipality Den Bommel, then it was a separate municipality until 1966 when it was merged with Middelharnis.

In 2001, the town of Stad aan 't Haringvliet had 1068 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.23 km², and contained 425 residences. The slightly larger statistical area "Stad aan 't Haringvliet" has a population of around 1340. On 1 January 2009 the town had 1399 inhabitants.
