The original decision to name the school the "South Rebels" stemmed from the original Union High, with "South Rebels" being the logical name for the school after the "Union" was split. There is also the question of celebrating the confederacy which some believe was fighting to continue to own other human beings.
In October 2010, A shirt depicting a re-coloration of the Confederate Flag was sold in the spirit shop. The Principal decided to pull the shirts. School officials have expressed their interest in abandoning the flag and their mascot for a new team name, the Clovers. This led to an outcry from both graduates and students of South high alike.
