Background

Born George Amyand, he was the older son of Sir George Amyand, 1st Baronet and his wife Anna Maria Korteen, daughter of John Abraham Korteen. In 1766, he succeeded his father as baronet. Cornewall was educated at Eton College

. In 1771, he assumed by royal licence the surname Cornewall in lieu of his patronym, to inherit from his father-in-law.

 between 1802 and 1807. Cornwall served in the Herefordshire Militia and became its colonel in 1805. He was owner of a plantage in Grenada

 and let build Moccas Court, the family's later residence. He inherited Mouse Castle, Cusop

Family

On 18 July 1771, he married Catherine Cornewall, daughter of Velters Cornewall, and had by her two sons and six daughters. Cornewall died in 1819 and was buried at his seat. He was succeeded in the baronetcy by his older son George. His fourth daughter Frances Elizabeth was married to Henry Devereux, 14th Viscount Hereford
