, Mohd Shafie obtain the Diploma in Shipping Management and London Business College, and Bachelor in Economics with Honors from North Staffordshire Polytechnic (since 1992, Staffordshire University) in England.
He is married to Datin Seri Shuryani binti Shuaib and has 6 children.

He was appointed Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government on 25 May 1999 and the moved to Defence Ministry to Deputy Minister takes office between 14 December 1999 and 29 March 2004. Between 2000 and 2003, Mohd Shafie had also became a member of UMNO Supreme Council.
Mohd Shafie was appointed Minister of Domestic, Trade and Consumer Affairs on 30 March 2004 under then Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
's cabinet and was later given a portfolio of the Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage. On 10 April 2009, Mohd Shafie was appointed to the different post for Minister of Rural and Regional Development under the current Prime Minister
