History

The municipality was created in 1834 from the cooperative farms (Bäuerten) of "Willigen," "Geissholz," "Falchern" and "Lugen." The name Schattenhalb ("Shadow-half") refers to the shady face of the mountainside south of Meiringen

Geography

Schattenhalb has an area of 31.5 km² (12.2 sq mi). Of this area, 26.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 39% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 1.7% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (32.5%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).
