found 11,600 people in the township, 3,457 of whom lived in the unincorporated portions of the township.
Most of the city of St. Marys
is located in northern Saint Marys Township, and the eastern end of Grand Lake St. Marys
and its respective state park are located in the western part of the township.
Saint Marys Township is crossed by the Saint Marys River. It contains thirty-six square miles.
Originally part of Mercer County
, the township was formed in 1824.

The majority of the township is in the Saint Marys City School District with the southern portions being split between the New Bremen Local School District and the New Knoxville Local School District. Saint Marys' high school is St. Marys Memorial High School, with the nickname, the "Rough Riders". The school is active in the Western Buckeye League (WBL) in sports. The football team has won three state championships in division 2, in 1990, 1992 and 1993. In 2004 they were state runners up in division 3.

Government
The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees.Public services
