SBSK (pulp)
Encyclopedia
SBSK is an acronym for Southern bleached softwood kraft. It this is a wood pulp
Wood pulp
Pulp is a lignocellulosic fibrous material prepared by chemically or mechanically separating cellulose fibres from wood, fibre crops or waste paper. Wood pulp is the most common raw material in papermaking.-History:...

mainly produced in the southern USA. The main raw materials are slash pine

Properties

SBSK is produced from mixed fibre sources, but the main wood species of the pulp is dominating the properties. All are have long fibres. Slash pine and longleaf pine have thick walled fibres and makes the pulp suitable for fluff pulp.

Applications

SBSK is used in in fluff pulp
Fluff pulp
Fluff pulp is a type of chemical pulp made from long fibre softwoods. Important parameters for fluff pulp are bulk and water absorbency.-Manufacture:...

, tissue paper
Tissue paper

, filter paper
Filter paper
Filter paper is a semi-permeable paper barrier placed perpendicular to a liquid or air flow. It is used to separate fine solids from liquids or air.-Properties:Filter paper comes in various porosities and grades depending on the applications it is meant for...

 and mercerised pulp

Mercerised pulp is a bleached pulp that is treated with hot dilluted alkali to get extra high bulk and high porosity. The pulp feels and looks similar to a cotton ball.-Manufacture:...

. It is used as reinforcement fibres when making paper
Paper
Paper is a thin material mainly used for writing upon, printing upon, drawing or for packaging. It is produced by pressing together moist fibers, typically cellulose pulp derived from wood, rags or grasses, and drying them into flexible sheets....

or as raw material for kraft paper
Kraft paper
Kraft paper or kraft is paper or paperboard produced from chemical pulp produced in the kraft process.Pulp produced by the kraft process is stronger than that made by other pulping processes; acidic sulfite processes degrade cellulose more, leading to weaker fibers, and mechanical pulping...
