Most of the Village of Rushville is within the Town of Potter
in Yates County and a small part is in the Town of Gorham
in Ontario County.
Rushville was originally called Federal Hollow. The town was called this because many of Rushville's first settlers were from Massachusetts and favored the Federalist political party. The Village changed the name after the turn of the century when the Jeffersonian party grew more popular, and Rushville was renamed after Dr. Benjamin Rush of Revolutionary fame. Rushville is said to be the first place in America to be named for Jefferson's good friend.

living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.6 males.
