from 1989 to 1991. He then took up an appointment at the Ministry of Defence
before taking command of 24 Airmobile Brigade from 1995 to 1996 deploying to Bosnia
as part of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps in 1995.
He went on to be Chief of Staff at Headquarters Northern Ireland
and then Director of Plans & Resources. In 2000 he was appointed Commander of the Multi-national Division (South West) in Bosnia
after which he became General Officer Commanding
1st (UK) Armoured Division which deployed to Iraq
in 2003. For his service in Iraq he was given the Distinguished Service Order
(DSO). In 2003 be became Deputy Chief of Operations at Permanent Joint Headquarters, Northwood
, before becoming Commander of the Field Army
in 2005. He retired from active duty in January 2008.
