History

The name "Retrospect Ensemble" was adopted in May 2009 by the trustees for the musical charity then known as "The King's Consort", which had been set up by Robert King

 in 1992. King had also created the period music orchestra, The King's Consort

, in 1980.

To coincide with the charity's new identity, a new performing group, Retrospect Ensemble, was launched in May 2009. The Artistic Director is Matthew Halls, a conductor and harpsichordist who was Artistic Director of The King's Consort

Repertoire and artistic direction

While the Ensemble also performs music from the 17th and 18th centuries, in naming the new group, Matthew Halls aimed to broaden its artistic direction to encompass historically-aware performance

In April 2009, Retrospect Ensemble signed a contract with Linn Records
