In March 2010, CBC Television renewed Republic of Doyle for a second season. Production resumed in St. John's in June 2010; the second season started airing in Canada on January 12 2011.
On February 11, 2011, CBC announced that Republic of Doyle would be renewed for a third season.
On July 04, 2011 production started on the first episode of season three, which will premiere in January, 2012 on CBC TV. The first episode of the third season of Republic of Doyle will feature two time Oscar winner Russell Crowe
as a major Guest Star as well as Scott Grimes

- Jake Doyle – Jake is a 30 year-old man living with his father Malachy because his ex-wife Nikki kicked him out. He works as a private investigator with his father, Mal and his father’s girlfriend, Rose. He is over-protective of his 16 year old niece, Tinny. He is the youngest child of Mal Doyle and his late wife Mary Ann, and their second son.
- Malachy Doyle – Malachy, known as Mal or Skipper and Poppy, is a private investigator with his son, Jake in their business "Doyle and Doyle." He is 56 and has 3 “grown” children, Christian, Kathleen and Jake, and one granddaughter Tinny who is living with him while her mother (Kathleen Doyle) is away working in Alberta. His girlfriend Rose lives with him, his granddaughter, and his youngest son Jake. He pokes fun at Jake's somewhat 'unsuccessful' relationship with women.
- Rose Miller – Rose is the girlfriend of Mal. She works as the office manager/sectary/techie for Doyle and Doyle. She seems to have a love/hate relationship with her husband’s granddaughter Tinny and his son Jake. She has a criminal ex-husband who keeps on coming named Martin Poole.
- Nikki Renholds – Nikki is Jake's ex-wife. Nikki is a doctor at one of the St. John's hospitals. Nikki has helped out with different things throughout cases in the first few episodes.

- Walter McLean – Walter has been Jake's best friend since kindergarten and his wing-man that used to be right behind Jake in a fight. He is currently Jake's lawyer in his divorce from his wife Nikki. Walter usually isn't in many of the episodes, but still he is important.
