Renal plexus
Encyclopedia
The renal plexus is formed by filaments from the celiac plexus
, the aorticorenal ganglion
, and the aortic plexus
.
It is joined also by the least splanchnic nerve
.
The nerves from these sources, fifteen or twenty in number, have a few ganglia
developed upon them.
They accompany the branches of the renal artery
into the kidney
; some filaments are distributed to the spermatic plexus
and, on the right side, to the inferior vena cava
.
Celiac plexus
The celiac plexus or coeliac plexus, also known as the solar plexus, is a complex network of nerves located in the abdomen, where the celiac trunk, superior mesenteric artery, and renal arteries branch from the abdominal aorta...
, the aorticorenal ganglion
Aorticorenal ganglion
Sympathetic input to the gut comes from the sympathetic chain next to the thoracic vertebrae. The upper nerve supply leaves the sympathetic chain by the greater splanchnic nerve and synapses in the celiac ganglion before proceeding onto the foregut...
, and the aortic plexus
Aortic plexus
The abdominal aortic plexus is formed by branches derived, on either side, from the celiac plexus and ganglia, and receives filaments from some of the lumbar ganglia....
.
It is joined also by the least splanchnic nerve
Thoracic splanchnic nerves
Thoracic splanchnic nerves are splanchnic nerves that arise from the sympathetic trunk in the thorax and travel inferiorly to provide sympathetic innervation to the abdomen...

The nerves from these sources, fifteen or twenty in number, have a few ganglia
Ganglion
In anatomy, a ganglion is a biological tissue mass, most commonly a mass of nerve cell bodies. Cells found in a ganglion are called ganglion cells, though this term is also sometimes used to refer specifically to retinal ganglion cells....
developed upon them.
They accompany the branches of the renal artery
Renal artery
The renal arteries normally arise off the side of the abdominal aorta, immediately below the superior mesenteric artery, and supply the kidneys with blood. Each is directed across the crus of the diaphragm, so as to form nearly a right angle with the aorta....
into the kidney
Kidney
The kidneys, organs with several functions, serve essential regulatory roles in most animals, including vertebrates and some invertebrates. They are essential in the urinary system and also serve homeostatic functions such as the regulation of electrolytes, maintenance of acid–base balance, and...
; some filaments are distributed to the spermatic plexus
Spermatic plexus
The spermatic plexus is derived from the renal plexus, receiving branches from the aortic plexus. It accompanies the internal spermatic artery to the testis....
and, on the right side, to the inferior vena cava
Inferior vena cava
The inferior vena cava , also known as the posterior vena cava, is the large vein that carries de-oxygenated blood from the lower half of the body into the right atrium of the heart....
