Power Transmission Projects

Reliance Infrastructure Limited has commissioned country’s first 100% privately owned transmission line in India on Build, Own, Operate basis. This line has been constructed between Solapur and Karad, two prime cities and district places in the Western Regions of the Maharashtra State.
116 km long 400kV double circuit Solapur – Karad transmission line is the first line under the Western Regional System Strengthening Scheme (WRSSS) project having an outlay of about Rs. 1,400 crore and a total length of 1,500 km. RInfra’s wholly owned subsidiary company, Reliance Power Transmission Ltd. (RPTL) was awarded the project through tariff based competitive bidding process.
After signing the Power Transmission Agreement with the Western Region beneficiaries in March 2009 and subsequently achieving financial closure in 70 days, the Company has completed the first line in a record time of 15 months and is expected to commission the complete project by the Q2FY12.
Once commissioned, the project would facilitate the free flow of 4,000 MW from power rich Eastern region to the power starved Western region of the country and would benefit all regional utilities.
Currently, RInfra is executing 5 transmission projects spreading across almost all parts of the country with a total project outlay of over Rs. 6,600 crore. The Company owns 3 out of 4 Ultra Mega Transmission projects awarded to private sector till date, making RInfra as the largest developer of transmission projects in private space.

as the Gas for this project was not tied up. The matter remained under in the Bombay high court. On June 15, 2009 the Mumbai High court ruled the case in favour of the Reliance Natural Gas Limited asking the Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries to stick to its commitment of providing the gas to RNRL at a stipulated amount being agreed upon prior to the split between the brothers.

A revised gas supply agreement finally has been signed by the two Ambani brothers on Friday, June 25. 2010. The agreement between Mukesh Ambani-run Reliance Industries and his younger brother Anil—led RNRL paves the way for government to allocate gas to Anil Ambani group’s power plants.

The Supreme Court had asked the two groups to renegotiate the agreement based on its earlier ruling that government is the owner of the gas and hence, has the last word on its pricing and utilization.

Anil Ambani group, armed with the new agreement, would now approach to the government seeking allocation of gas to its power plants, including its upcoming projects in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh.

After the announcement in a subdued market, shares in Reliance Natural extended gains to more than 6 per cent.

However Tata Power and REL have an unusual business relationship in that Tata Power is a net generator of power and sells power to REL while REL has insufficient generation capacity to supply its Mumbai retail customers and thus must buy the shortfall from Tata Power. Tata Power and REL both compete directly against each other in the high end use industrial customer market. This has resulted in several contract disputes between the two .

Reliance Power

Reliance Infrastructure holds 44.96% of Reliance Power as on 31 December 2009. On January 15, 2008, Reliance Power attracted $27.5 billion of bids on the first day of its initial public offering (IPO), equivalent to 10.5 times the stock on offer, thereby, creating India's IPO record. The upper cut off price for the bid was Rs. 450. The proposed IPO was to fund the development of its six power projects across the country whose completion dates are scheduled from December 2009 to March 2014.
