Published by Black Press, the newspaper was first established in 1901 as the Red Deer Echo, changing its name to Alberta Advocate in 1903 and Red Deer Advocate in 1906. It currently publishes daily, from Monday to Saturday.

The newspaper had an audited average daily circulation of 16,032 copies, with a total weekly circulation of 96,190 copies, in 2008.
