Radio Tay is a division of Bauer Radio which broadcasts two Independent Local Radio
stations throughout Tayside
and northeast Fife
in Scotland
.
Tayside Sound Limited was incorporated on 27 April 1979 to set up a radio station in accordance with the regulatory body, Independent Broadcasting Authority
. Radio Tay commenced broadcasting on Friday 17 October 1980 from the Angus transmitter
near Dundee. A relay transmitter in Perth
began carrying Radio Tay programming five weeks later. Originally launched as a simulcast
station Radio Tay split into two radio services on 9 January 1995; Tay FM
and Tay AM
on FM
and AM
bands, respectively.
Both stations broadcast from studios at 6 North Isla Street in Dundee 24 hours a day. Tay FM produces 13 hours of local programming from Monday to Friday,16 hours on Saturday and 8 hours on a Sunday with evening and overnight programming simulcast from the studios of Clyde 1 in Glasgow. A Saturday morning programme is also simulcast from Forth 1 in Edinburgh. Tay AM produces eight hours of local programming each day with networked programming carried from the studios of Clyde 2
in Glasgow and Northsound 2
in Aberdeen. The station also produces a networked programme on weekday mornings.
According to their charter of service, Tay FM is "a contemporary and chart music and information station for 15-40 year-olds in the Dundee, Perth, Angus and N.E. Fife area". Tay AM is said to be "a chart and classic hits, sport, news and information station for over 35s in the Dundee, Perth, Angus and N.E. Fife area."
These services broadcast to the Tayside
catchment area, which is just over 360,000, and each have a market share of roughly 15% market share. The licence for both services is due to expire on 31 December 2013.
