History

The event is named in honour of Thomas Bryon, an Englishman who helped to establish thoroughbred racing in France in the 19th century. Bryon was the secretary at the founding meeting of the Société d'Encouragement, which later became the sport's main governing body. He published the first volume of the Calendrier des Courses de Chevaux (the French Racing Calendar) in 1834.

The Prix Thomas Bryon was introduced in 1924, and it was initially contested over 1,600 metres. It was cut to 1,500 metres in 1927. It was abandoned throughout World War II

The Prix Thomas Bryon is currently scheduled for the first half of October, but before 2001 it was often staged in late October or November.
