. It is run at Deauville over a distance of 1,200 metres (about 6 furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August.

History

The event was named in memory of Auguste de Morny
Charles Auguste Louis Joseph, duc de Morny

(1811–1865), the founder of Deauville Racecourse, and it was originally known as the "Prix de Morny". It was first run in 1865 – one year after the track staged its first meeting. The inaugural race was over 1,000 metres, and the prize money for the winning owner was 9,150 francs
French franc
The franc was a currency of France. Along with the Spanish peseta, it was also a de facto currency used in Andorra . Between 1360 and 1641, it was the name of coins worth 1 livre tournois and it remained in common parlance as a term for this amount of money...

.

In its early years the Prix de Morny's distance was frequently modified. The second and third runnings were contested over 1,200 metres, and this was extended to 1,300 metres for the following two years. It was increased to 1,400 metres in 1870.

The title of the race was changed to the "Prix de Deux Ans" in 1871 – a reference to the age of the horses competing. The distance was cut to 1,200 metres in 1887. The event continued as the Prix de Deux Ans until 1910, and the present name was introduced in 1911. This once again honoured the Duc de Morny, but now as the "Prix Morny", a shortened version of the original title, without the "de".

The Prix Morny was abandoned from 1914 to 1918 because of World War I

(1943, 1945). The first two editions at Longchamp were run over 1,000 metres, whereas the 1944 running was contested over 1,300 metres.

The race was opened to foreign horses in 1947. It was immediately won by such a contender – a British colt named Delirium. An earlier spell as an international race (1875 to 1908) had yielded no foreign winners.
