is a natural deep water harbor in south west China. It was designed and reconstructed as China's first modern port, the project being commenced in 1956. After nearly 50 years of construction, the existing 39 wharves

History
The Port of Zhanjiang was a minor fishing port until the French occupied the area in 1898. The French called it Fort Bayard, and hoped to develop it into a free port, however, the area was very impoverished which mitigated against this. The French remained in charge until the Japanese conquered the area in 1943 during World War IIWorld War II
