History

Pike Township was one of the four original townships in the county, formed on November 6, 1827.

Geography

Pike Township covers an area of 17.57 square miles (45.5 km²); of this, 0.2 square mile (0.517997622 km²) or 1.14 percent is water. The streams of Dry Branch, Foster Branch, Johnson Branch, Jordan Creek and Redwood Creek run through this township. The township's only town is West Lebanon

Cemeteries

The township contains two cemeteries. Shanklin Hill Cemetery is a small burial ground located on the western border of the township. West Lebanon Cemetery is much larger and is located southeast of the town.

Pike Township has a trustee who administers rural fire protection and ambulance service, provides poor relief, manages cemetery care, and performs farm assessment, among other duties. The trustee is assisted in these duties by a three-member township board. The trustees and board members are elected to four-year terms.

Climate and weather

In recent years, average temperatures in West Lebanon have ranged from a low of 15 °F (-9.4 °C) in January to a high of 85 °F (29.4 °C) in July, although a record low of -26 °F was recorded in January 1994 and a record high of 105 °F (40.6 °C) was recorded in August 1988. Average monthly precipitation ranged from 1.8 inches (4.6 cm) inches in February to 4.53 inches (11.5 cm) inches in June.
