However, it is unlikely that Crichton's Piedmont is related to the real Piedmont in any way, as the book places the town south of Las Vegas, east of San Bernardino and west of Phoenix, and also at a spot with "no important area of habitation for a radius of nearly one hundred and twelfe miles", which would place it very roughly some 40 miles east of Lake Havasu in a barren mountain area.
