The present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, and the Phoenix Stakes was initially classed at Group 2 level. It was promoted to Group 1 status in 1979. The race was switched to Leopardstown
in 1982, and it returned to Phoenix Park with an extended distance of 6 furlongs the following year.
Phoenix Park Racecourse closed in 1990, and the event was transferred to Leopardstown in 1991. It moved to the Curragh in 2002.
