Information

Pefkohori has not achieved its fame because of its natural beauty. It is the tourist industry that has dominated the area with its beaches, hotels, spas, restaurants, tavernas, etc. The last time the area was on the News was when on August 26, 2006, a forest fire ravaged Pefkochori and devastated much of the forest and several buildings in the outskirts of the town. Several houses and villas were burnt. Hydro was snapped out and roads were closed. All residents and tourists had to be evacuated.

Paliouri was brought closer with a road built in the mid-20th century. The road network encouraged a growth of tourism, water and phone lines soon followed as well as more paved roads in the 1980s. The population growths in the later part of the 20th century and recent years were due to tourism. The area had low unemployment rates during these times. The rate growth slowed and that caused emigration to other parts of northern Greece and the world as well as parts of the rural areas. Thus, the rural settlement Panorama was abandoned.
