Over the next 5 years, the school board's capital plan forecasts needing to open 26 new schools to keep up with enrollment growth due to the recent baby boom.

French immersion

The Peel District School Board offers a French immersion program at 19 of its elementary schools, and at three of its high schools. In addition, two other high schools have partial French immersion, and another six schools offer an extended French program.

For the 2004-2005 school year, there were 5,160 elementary students (5% of the elementary student population) and 1,025 high school students (3% of the high school student population) enrolled in the French immersion program.

Transportation costs to the Peel District School Board to get elementary immersion students to schools with the French immersion program amounted to an extra expense of $1.4 million per year. For the same period, provincial grants provided to the Peel District School Board by the province of Ontario for French immersion programs totalled $1.789 million.
