WIN Program

The Welcome and Information for Newcomers (WIN) program was a one-day orientation specifically designed for newcomer middle school students and their parents. WIN was offered to students in grades 6, 7 and 8 at Balmoral on Sept 1, 2009. The program was funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and provided in partnership with the Multicultural Settlement and Education Partnership (MSEP).
Peer Leaders

The School chose a few students from the school to be peer leaders in the WIN program. These Student attended a few meetings in June and also came for some training one day before the WIN program. “The students will be working closely with peer leaders who support the program. The peer leaders speak a variety of languages and help to explain various school routines, while relating to the students by making them feel comfortable, as they were once newcomers themselves” said Nala Moorthy,a MSEP facilitator.
Activities

Activities included, demonstration of lockers and daily physical education routines as well as familiarization with washrooms and change rooms. Students also learned about extracurricular activities offered through the school and student resources.
