. The first edition occurred August 22–24 in 2008, and included over 60 musical acts from around the world, as well as several art installations. The festival grounds included the Polo Field which was home to the Lands End Stage, the Speedway Meadow with Twin Peaks Stage and the Panhandle Stage, and finally the Lindley Meadow and the Sutro and Presido stages. Bringing in 40–60,000 attendees a day the inaugural festival was mostly a success, however was criticized for its crowd-control situation. The festival was also geared to the new green movement and included numerous initiatives to make the festival eco-friendly. Like inviting participants to use ridesharing to get to the event. E.g. SunyRide, 511 , Craig's List The second edition of the festival was held between August 28–30, 2009 and streamed live on YouTube via the festival's YouTube account.

Outside Lands also features attractions that focus around food, wine, and art. There is a separate music lineup for the wine lands section of the park. There are also areas that offer separate entertainment, including a sports lounge, an arcade/bar, and various food and art vendors.

The festival is designed to utilize several strategies of being eco-friendly, as well as to educate the public about eco-friendly movements. There are solar power stages, a refillable water program, a waste diversion program, a recycling program, and bike valet parking program. There have also been workshops to educate about organic food and farming.
