History

The Orange Line is the second line in the San Diego Trolley system with service beginning in 1986, initially operating between downtown San Diego and Euclid Avenue. The East Line, as it was then called, kept its name after successive extensions to Spring Street, El Cajon, along the Bayside in downtown San Diego, and Santee. It was renamed the Orange Line in 1997. Service between Gillespie Field and the Santee Town Center was replaced by the Green Line in 2005.

Trolley Renewal Project

As part of the 2015 Operating Plan, MTS plans to shorten the western portion of the Orange Line to terminate at the Santa Fe Depot. To accommodate the new Siemens S70 models to be usable on the line, stations will need to undergo renovation, although this will be done over a period of time to prevent the disruption of operation. The New LRVs are scheduled to begin operation on the Orange Line in July 2012. Currently the America Plaza
