Topics covered

Oikos publishes original and innovative research on all aspects of ecology. Emphasis is on theoretical and empirical work aimed at generalization and synthesis across taxa, systems and ecological disciplines. The following topics are covered:
  • Applied Ecology
    Applied ecology
Applied ecology is a subfield within ecology, which considers the application of the science of ecology to real-world questions. It is an integrated treatment of the ecological, social, and biotechnological aspects of natural resource conservation and management. It is also called ecological or...

  • Ecophysiology

  • Behavioral ecology
    Behavioral ecology
Behavioral ecology, or ethoecology, is the study of the ecological and evolutionary basis for animal behavior, and the roles of behavior in enabling an animal to adapt to its environment...

  • Community ecology
  • Ecosystem ecology
    Ecosystem ecology
Ecosystem ecology is the integrated study of biotic and abiotic components of ecosystems and their interactions within an ecosystem framework. This science examines how ecosystems work and relates this to their components such as chemicals, bedrock, soil, plants, and animals.Ecosystem ecology...

  • Evolutionary Biology
  • Functional Ecology
    Functional ecology
Functional ecology is the branch of ecology that focuses on the roles, or functions, that species play in the community or ecosystem in which they occur. In this approach, physiological, anatomical, and life history characteristics of the species are emphasized...

  • Population ecology
    Population ecology
Population ecology is a sub-field of ecology that deals with the dynamics of species populations and how these populations interact with the environment. It is the study of how the population sizes of species living together in groups change over time and space....

  • Systems ecology
    Systems ecology
Systems ecology is an interdisciplinary field of ecology, taking a holistic approach to the study of ecological systems, especially ecosystems. Systems ecology can be seen as an application of general systems theory to ecology. Central to the systems ecology approach is the idea that an ecosystem...

Oikos Blog

The Oikos blog is a space for authors, readers, and the ecological community at large to post and leave comments about papers published in the journal Oikos. The idea is to further the dissemination and publication process in ecology and evolution in addition to traditional peer-reviewed publications. The blog is also a space for the community of ecologists to have dynamic access to dialogue and timely dissemination as well as a space for the community to connect with each other – authors, editors, staff, and readers. A link to the blog can be found in the list of external links below.

Per Brink Oikos Award

The Per Brinck Oikos Award recognizes extraordinary and important contributions to the science of ecology. It is delivered in honor of the Swedish ecologist Professor Per Brinck who has played an instrumental role for the development and recognition of the science of ecology in the Nordic countries, especially as serving as the Editor-in-Chief for Oikos for many years. The award is given annually to a world-leading ecologist, nominated by Oikos' subject editors.

Editorial Structure

Oikos has an international board of subject editors as well as an advisory panel and a publication board. See Editorial Board page for more details. The current Editor-in-Chief is Tim Benton, BA, Oxford, PhD, Cambridge, FSB, FLS, Professor of Population Ecology Institute of Integrative and Comparative Biology, at the University of Leeds.
