Climate

Newport has mild, wet weather throughout the year with the heaviest precipitation falling during the winter months. Annually, there is only 0.4 day with maximum temperatures of 90 °F (32.2 °C) or higher. There are 20.5 days with minimum temperatures of 32 °F (0 °C) or lower. The record high temperature was 100 °F (37.8 °C) on June 24, 1925, and July 11, 1961. The record low temperature was 1 °F (-17.2 °C) on December 8, 1972.

Average annual precipitation is 67.77 inches (1,721.4 mm). There are an average of 173 days with measurable precipitation. The wettest year was 1968 with 111.03 inches (2,820.2 mm) and the driest year was 1929 with 38.45 inches (976.6 mm). The most precipitation in one month was 26.15 inches (664.2 mm) in December 1917. The most precipitation in 24 hours was 6.1 inches (154.9 mm) on November 8, 1896. Average annual snowfall is only 1.1 inches (27.9 mm). The snowiest year was 1972 with 15.5 inches (393.7 mm), including 11 inches (279.4 mm) in December 1972.
