New Earth Records
Encyclopedia
New Earth Records is an independent record label
focusing primarily on New Age Music
and World Music
. It was founded in 1990
in Munich
, Germany
, by European entrepreneurs Bhikkhu Schober and Waduda Paradiso under the auspices of the spiritual teacher known as Osho
. Initially called Tao Music--a name chosen by Osho himself, the company was intended to market and distribute Osho's meditation instruction recordings. However, Schober and Paradiso opted to change the name to New Earth to avoid a trademark dispute with a company with a similar name in Germany.
During the early nineties, New Earth began to expand its scope, signing a number of recording artists who produce eastern-influenced, meditative music. Among the first were Prem Joshua
, Al Gromer Khan
, Miten
, Hariprasad Chaurasia
and James Asher
.
In 1995, the unprecedented success of the European release of James Asher's, Feet In The Soil, spurred the independent label to move to Boulder, Colorado
, United States
, (according to the New Earth catalog, the album has sold over 200,000 copies and has "defined world beat as a genre." )
In 1999, New Earth moved its creative offices to Santa Fe, New Mexico
.
Today, New Earth's catalog is dominated by music intended to accompany various alternative healing practices such as Reiki
, massage
, meditation
, and Yoga
. New Earth's slogan, "Visionary music to enhance well being," suggests a cultivated focus on the LOHAS
market segment.
New Earth's most prominent artists include Deuter
, Rasa, Lisa Lynne
, Manose, Terry Oldfield
, Chinmaya Dunster
, and James Asher
.
In 2010 New Earth Records licensed the album Beyond: Buddhist and Christian Prayers, which features Tina Turner
, Dechen Shak-Dagsay
, and Regula Curti. The album, endorsed by the Dalai Lama
, is designed to take the listener 'beyond religious differences.'
