Naval Radio Transmitter Facility Grindavik had originally two towers for its longwave service. One with a height of 243.8 metres and the other with a height of 182.9 metres, which were, when built the tallest man-made objects in Iceland. The smaller mast was replaced by a new mast of same height in 1983 situated at 63°51'3"N 22°27'6"W, the larger mast by a 304.8 metres tall guyed mast

 at 63°51'1"N 22°28'0"W. The 1000' LF Communications Antenna/Tower and Helix House which replaced the existing 800’ tower was replaced with a 1000’ high structure broadbanded and including a 2500 SF Helix House.
Naval Radio Transmitter Facility Grindavik was the 1999 winner of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Outstanding Transmission Facility Award (Category II), and was a runner up in the same category in 1997.
The 1000' LF Communications Antenna/Tower and Helix House was structurally designed by Donald W. Anderson, PE (http://www.linkedin.com/in/donaldandersonpe) who additionally managed the design and construction programs while employed at Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Atlantic. The final design incorporated many new and improved items which required integrated electronic and structural designs- including a new and improved Helix House RF Copper Shielding design and installation method (designed by NAVFAC and co-production implemented by NAVFAC and the Icelandic Prime Contractor). All successes in the program improved on the former electronic efficiencies experienced in former designs and where partially influential in the before mentioned awards. It is the second tallest structure in Iceland
