The Nathyal are descendents of the Janjua Rajputs. It is not clear what is the origin of this term 'nathyal'. According to one account, a legend warrior 'Natha', an ancestor in their pedigree, who was a Janjua rajput, gave his name to his tribe.

While Horace Arthur Rose in his book 'A glossary of the tribes and castes of the Punjab and North West Frontier Province', desrcribes the Nathyal as a Janjua descendent tribe. The Nathyal share many similarities with the above mentioned tribes like geographical location, language, culture, a strong tradition for the military service, and association of tribal name to one of their ancestors.
