The line is being built by the Metro 5 SpA consortium. The consortium signed the contract for construction of the Porta Garibaldi to San Siro section on 2 February 2011. After opening the consortium will manage the line for 25 years.

Works on the first phase are already finished, and the test period is in progress. However, a flooding forced to postpone the opening to the end of 2012.

Route

The first stage, 5.6 km long with 9 stations, will run from Zara to Bignami and is planned to open in 2012. The second stage is planned to open in 2013, and will run from Zara to Porta Garibaldi station. The third and fourth are both planned to open in 2015, and will run from Garibaldi to San Siro stadium

The systems are controlled by a fully automated computer system, located at the control and maintenance center.
