After his release in the 2001 summer, Vargas moved to F.C. Alverca
, experience his most steady period in his country, with three consecutive top flight seasons, being relegated in 2003–04. Subsequently, he moved shortly to União de Leiria, but quickly changed to G.D. Estoril Praia in division two

In the 2006 summer, Vargas began playing abroad, his first stop being with Cyprus
