Encyclopedia
Michael Novales is a Filipino
figure skater. He is the first skater to represent the Philippines in an ISU Championships, which he did at the 2006 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships
, where he placed 14th. He is coached by John Nicks
and Russ Scott.
Michael competed in the 2007 Asian Winter Games in Changchun, China despite having arrived in the sub-zero weather with a serious flu. He managed to get on his skates for the two programs but was severely affected by chest congestion and coughing. Despite that handicap, he performed his programs well despite a few falls early on. He feels his inability to fight off the virus was caused by the long flight to Manila where he had to perform, and two additional flights to get to Changchun having arrived totally exhausted.
He competed at the United States Figure Skating Championships
as a novice in 2002 and 2003, where he placed ninth and seventh, respectively. He attends Saddleback College
and was the 2005 U.S. Collegiate Championships at the junior level. He began representing the Philippines internationally in 2005. He also works as a coach.
In 2005 Mike starred in Spherical, a show choreographed by David Liu for the Grand Opening of the World Ice Arena in Shenzhen, China. Mike starred alongside a large international cast and was seen on nationwide television.
In late 2008 and early 2009 Mike performed for Rand Productions in a show at Ocean Park in Hong Kong which ran for 3 months. After returning home, he was contacted by Bietak Productions in Santa Monica to skate a starring role on the world's largest cruise liner, the Freedom of the Seas which has its on permanent ice rink on board. Mike will perform there from May 1, 2009 for six months.
Mike lives in Laguna Hills, California with his family and dog Ginger. He teaches at the rink where he trained, Aliso Viejo Ice Palace in Orange County.
Mike continues to perform in shows around the world and will soon complete a 6 month stint on the Mariner of the Seas liner out of Los Angeles. He plans to perform in the 2010 Christmas ice show at Knotts Berry Farm to be followed by another 6 months at sea on Freedom of the Seas, again for Bietak Productions of Santa Monica.
Mike has numerous videos on youtube.com including his recent skydiving jump and a leap from the world's tallest bungee platform atop the 65 story Macau Tower in Macao, China.
Mike's family includes his mother Edna, brother Vince and sister Charlene (dogs Ginger and Amber and a Cockateel). He does plan a return to university to complete his education in the future.
