, the new school board members re-instated the Indian as the mascot.

On April 14, 2008, a group of 11 Menomonie Citizens presented a petition to the school board in regards to the Indian logo. They believed that "Schools ought to be teaching humanity along with other subject matters" and "The use of the Indians nickname sends a subliminal message to children that flies in the face of efforts to teach valued humanitarian principles." The goal of the petition was to bring awareness to the issue, and to have the issue of the Indian logo and mascot be discussed at future meetings.

Ultimately, Menomonie decided to retire the Indians nickname and imagery, adopting 'Mustangs' as their nickname. Ironically, 'Mustangs' was the nickname they had adopted after retiring the 'Indians' name before said school board election.
