History

Melbourne University Rangers was founded in 1980 as an amateur squad to complement the older Melbourne University Blues team. In 1991 the team was moved into the Provisional leagues in Victoria and consecutive seasons of promotion

 saw the Rangers maintain their presence in these provisional tiers throughout the 1990s. In 2003 the Rangers finished 3rd in the Provisional 1 North-West Division, narrowly missing out on promotion to the State League for the first time. In 2008 the Rangers defeated promotion challengers Whittlesea United 6-1 before a 7-0 win over the relegated Melbourne Tornado ensured promotion to the State League for the first time in Melbourne Rangers' history. In their first season in the State League, the Rangers finished 9th.

Melbourne University Rangers supporters have historically been restricted to family and friends of the squad due to the team failing to win promotion from the provisional Victorian leagues—but following the team's promotion to the State League in 2009, the Rangers have expanded their following beyond immediate club contacts. In 2009, club management has pushed to improve the fanbase and emulate the appeal of college-based football
