Sustainable initiatives

Recognized as a leader in the green building industry, McCownGordon's commitment is to provide clients with sustainable buildings that not only cost less to operate, but are healthier for the occupants and the environment. More than 70 percent of the firm's operations and estimating team are LEED Accredited Professionals, allowing it to offer leadership and expertise vital to the creation of a sustainable community. The firm includes a sustainable construction goal and provides training and direction to owners, architects, engineers and subcontractors on each of its projects, whether a building is designed to achieve LEED Certification or not. By incorporating eco-friendly construction techniques and products on every project, the firm provides better working conditions to construction crews and long-term benefits to the end user.

McCownGordon took an initiative to elevate its sustainable presence on jobsites. The McCownGordon Eco-Friendly Mobile Office Trailer is the first of its kind in the nation, and was refurbished from a trailer destined for the landfill. Rebuilt entirely with recyclable materials, the trailer includes solar panels, wind turbine, composting toilet, recycled flooring and furniture, recycled fiber insulation, FSC Certified

In addition to sustainable field operations, McCownGordon is committed to implementing green practices in the office with its Go Green Program. The program gives constant reminders to associates about the use of unnecessary products, recycling, printing and general awareness of sustainable practices. The use of paper and plastic products has been eliminated by the use of permanent glassware and utensils, which are utilized for meetings, lunches and everyday use. In addition, recycle containers for all possible recycled products are available.

The company encourages interest and participation within the community and has a company policy to devote at least 10 percent of after-tax profits to the health, children, culture and sustainability of the region.

McCownGordon Construction has participated in the ArtsKC Fund Workplace Giving Campaign since 2006. In 2008, the company ranked No. 1 for the Top 5 Highest Grossing Workplace Giving Campaigns (26-200 employee category), which didn't include corporate contributions or matches.

United Way

McCownGordon Construction has been an ongoing contributor to United Way since the company's inception. Each year, the company puts on a United Way Campaign Week to encourage associates to give, advocate and volunteer. In 2008 alone, the company and its associates raised more than $34,000.

In addition, the company gifted each 2008 Senior graduate of Greensburg High School a new Dell laptop computer to wish them well into college. McCownGordon is serving as the construction manager for the new Greensburg USD 422 K–12 school, which is expected to achieve LEED Platinum certification, the hightest attainable level of sustainability according to USGBC guidelines.

Harvesters

McCownGordon Construction is a supporter of Harvesters, a national food bank, donating time and monetary donations to the organization. Teams of architects, engineers and builders compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. At the close of the exhibition, all the canned food is donated to local Harvesters organization. In addition, the firm annually sells cookbooks compiled of recipes from associates, the profit from which benefits Harvesters.
