Route description

MD 274 begins as Queen Street at an intersection with MD 273 (Main Street) in the town of Rising Sun. The state highway heads south, leaving the town limits as it curves to the southeast and becomes Joseph Biggs Memorial Highway. MD 272 passes through a mix of farmland and scattered residences while heading southeast along a ridge separating North East Creek to the northeast from Principio Creek and Stony Run to the southwest. The state highway passes through the communities of Farmington and College Green on its way to Bay View. The old alignment of MD 274, Old Farmington Road, splits to the east and MD 274 intersects the old alignment of MD 272, Old Bayview Road, before reaching its eastern terminus at MD 272 (North East Road) across from the entrance to Cecil College

and just north of MD 272's interchange with I-95 (John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway).

History

A section of present-day MD 274 was paved from Post Road between Farmington and College Green north to Pierce Road south of Rising Sun by 1910. The gap between that section and MD 273 in Rising Sun was filled by 1927. MD 274 remained a spur from Rising Sun to College Green until the highway to Bay View was completed in 1942. MD 274 was extended east a short distance from Old Bayview Road to its present terminus at MD 272 around 1962.
