Coogan was coached at University of Maryland by Charles Florence Torpey, who headed the Men's and Women's running teams at La Salle University

Coogan was married to Gwynneth Coogan, also an Olympic runner, who ran the 10,000 meters in Barcelona in 1992.
He has served as head coach of numerous Phillips Exeter Academy
cross country teams, Tufts University and coached the distance runners at MIT for three years. It was recently reported that Coogan will be an assistant coach at Dartmouth College.
