Kanie fled Iraq in 1993. He studied at the University of Amsterdam, and completed his PhD in political science in 2010; he teaches in the department of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Jewish studies at the same university.

Four of his books have been published in Kurdistan. He is one of the editorial board members of "Rahand", a Kurdish intellectual magazine. He publishes in the Kurdish newspapers Hawlati
